Antimatter: the matching ingredients

For every charged matter particle there is an antiparticle with the same mass and opposite charges.

Same mass, opposite charges, real particles

A partner, not negative mass

The electron has a partner called the positron. Both have the same mass, but their electric charges are −1 and +1. A quark has an antiquark with opposite electric and color charges. Antihydrogen has been observed to fall downward, consistently with ordinary attractive gravity within the precision of the ALPHA experiment. This does not yet establish equal acceleration to arbitrary precision; “anti” does not mean backward in time or made of negative energy.

What about neutral particles?

Zero electric charge does not prove a particle is its own antiparticle. A neutron has a distinct antineutron because its constituent quarks are replaced by antiquarks. The photon is its own antiparticle. Whether a neutrino is its own antiparticle remains an open experimental question.

Creation and annihilation

Enough energy in an allowed process can create a particle and antiparticle together. When an electron and positron meet, they can undergo annihilation into photons. Their energy and momentum are carried onward; nothing disappears. Total electric charge begins at zero and ends at zero.

An antiatom

An antiproton contains two anti-up quarks and one anti-down quark as its net content. An antiproton plus a positron can form antihydrogen. Its internal electromagnetic rules mirror hydrogen closely; precision comparisons test that expectation.

Why everyday objects are matter

The universe around us contains much more ordinary matter than antimatter. The Standard Model permits some matter–antimatter differences, but its known effects do not explain the observed cosmic imbalance. That is a question about early-universe history, not a claim that antimatter cannot exist today.

Keep the levels straight

Antiparticles are excitations of the quantum field system, not 58 extra everyday tiles to tack onto this trainer’s bookkeeping convention. The inventory lists field components and gauge directions, while particle/antiparticle states are possible excitations described by them.

From pair to photons
energy in an allowed interactionelectron −1 + positron +1
electron + positronphotons carry energy and momentum

The arrows show possible processes, not a promise that any nearby pair instantly annihilates.

Takeaway: Antimatter is a real matching set of particle states. Opposite charges and conserved totals organize what can happen.

What differs between an electron and positron?

  1. Their mass
  2. Their electric charge
  3. Whether one has energy
Answer and explanation

Their electric charge

Their masses match; their electric charges are opposite.

If an electron and positron annihilate into photons, what happened to their energy?

  1. It vanished
  2. It became negative mass
  3. The photons carry it onward
Answer and explanation

The photons carry it onward

Energy and momentum are conserved in the complete process.

Is a neutron necessarily its own antiparticle because it is electrically neutral?

  1. Yes
  2. No: an antineutron contains antiquarks
  3. Only if it is inside gold
Answer and explanation

No: an antineutron contains antiquarks

Net electric charge zero is not enough; the neutron and antineutron have different constituent quantum numbers.

What is antihydrogen made from?

  1. An antiproton and a positron
  2. A proton and a positron
  3. A neutron and an electron
Answer and explanation

An antiproton and a positron

Antihydrogen pairs an antiproton nucleus with a positron.

Does the Standard Model fully explain why our universe has more matter?

  1. Yes
  2. No
  3. It predicts that antimatter has negative gravity
Answer and explanation

No

Known Standard Model differences are insufficient to account for the observed imbalance.

Does the 58-entry inventory mean antiparticles do not exist?

  1. Yes
  2. No: the tally is a chosen count of field components, not all excitation states
  3. Only for neutrinos
Answer and explanation

No: the tally is a chosen count of field components, not all excitation states

Field bookkeeping and possible particle states are different counts.
