Before symmetry breaking
The electroweak gauge description has three SU(2) directions W₁,W₂,W₃ and one U(1) hypercharge direction B. These are field components in a chosen gauge basis. Do not assign the measured W or Z masses individually to W₁,W₂,W₃ or B before combining them.
First, the unbroken labels
Imagine four coordinates for the electroweak gauge system: W1, W2, W3, and B. These names describe how the fields are organized before you choose the physically useful post-Higgs combinations. The four coordinates are not four extra sets of observed bosons added to the later photon, W, and Z.
Build the charged pair
W1 and W2 are two real gauge directions. Appropriate complex combinations are called W⁺ and W⁻. The plus/minus labels are genuine electric charges of the physical excitations. We have changed basis, like describing the same motion by two different coordinate axes; we have not created extra underlying directions.
Build the neutral pair
W3 and B are neutral gauge directions. Their two mixtures are photon and Z. The photon is the combination tied to the electric-charge symmetry that remains unbroken, so it is massless in the model. The orthogonal Z combination is massive. The mixing angle tells you the precise weights; the beginner picture is “two inputs, two outputs.”
How the Higgs supplies mass
The Higgs doublet has a nonzero vacuum value in its neutral direction. This background changes the equations for W and Z so their physical excitations have rest mass; it leaves the photon massless. The four real Higgs coordinates yield one physical scalar h. Three other degrees of freedom appear as the additional longitudinal polarizations of the now massive W⁺, W⁻, and Z. This is a statement about field degrees of freedom, not a sticky medium slowing particles.
Keep track of all the degrees of freedom
A massless spin-1 gauge boson has two physical polarization states; a massive spin-1 boson has three. Before breaking, four massless electroweak gauge directions contribute 8 physical polarization degrees, and the Higgs doublet contributes 4 scalar degrees. Afterward, photon has 2, W⁺/W⁻/Z have 3 each, and h has 1: 2+9+1=12. The bookkeeping illustrates that the reorganization did not manufacture degrees of freedom.
After the Higgs vacuum selects a direction
W₁ and W₂ combine into charged W⁺ and W⁻ fields. W₃ and B mix into the neutral Z and photon. The photon remains massless, while the physical W and Z bosons are massive. Mixing is a re-expression of degrees of freedom, not the arrival of four extra original fields.
Physical carrier properties
W⁺ and W⁻ are spin-1 with charges +1 and −1 and mass near 80 GeV. Z is neutral spin-1 near 91 GeV. The photon is neutral massless spin-1. W-mediated charged-current vertices can change fermion flavor; Z-mediated neutral-current vertices do not change electric charge at a vertex.
One Higgs doublet
The minimal Standard Model has one complex Higgs SU(2) doublet, or four real scalar coordinates in that description. Following electroweak symmetry breaking, three degrees of freedom are reflected in the longitudinal polarizations of massive W⁺, W⁻, and Z; one physical spin-0 Higgs boson remains, mass near 125 GeV. The four coordinates are not four independent Higgs species.
Where masses come from
The Higgs vacuum value plus gauge couplings yield W and Z masses; charged fermion masses arise from Yukawa couplings to the Higgs field. The electron’s measured mass fixes its Yukawa coupling in the model. Most ordinary matter mass in protons and neutrons comes from QCD energy, not the tiny bare up/down masses summed up.
The neutrino exception
The original minimal Standard Model treats neutrinos as massless, but oscillations show nonzero neutrino mass differences. A mass mechanism requires an extension or added terms. The atlas does not invent a specific right-handed neutrino or a measured absolute mass for each weak flavor.
The first column names gauge-basis ingredients; the last names physical excitations after the Higgs background is included.
Takeaway: Count the electroweak directions once, then describe their physical combinations.
