How experiments built the model
The model earned trust through distinct predicted signatures and precision tests, not because a particle chart looked tidy.

What a detector actually sees
A detector records tracks, deposited energy, timing, and missing momentum, not a label printed “W” or “top.” Physicists compare many events with signal and background predictions. Inferred particles and couplings must explain repeatable distributions, including uncertainties.
1960s to 1973: quark structure and neutral currents
Deep inelastic electron scattering revealed internal proton structure consistent with partons/quarks. In 1973 CERN’s Gargamelle experiment found weak neutral-current events: neutrinos could interact without turning into a charged lepton. That was a sharp test of electroweak theory.
1983: W and Z
CERN experiments observed the charged W and neutral Z bosons. Their masses and decay patterns made the electroweak mixing picture concrete. Later, the LEP collider measured Z properties and other electroweak parameters very precisely.
1995: the top quark
CDF and DZero at Fermilab announced the top quark discovery. It was not spotted as a stable bead; its production and decay products made characteristic event patterns. This completed the expected six-quark flavor list.
1998: neutrino oscillations
Super-Kamiokande’s atmospheric neutrino evidence showed flavor change in flight. That tells us neutrino mass eigenstates are not all identical in mass, pushing beyond the original massless-neutrino minimal model.
2012: the Higgs boson
ATLAS and CMS found a new boson with decay signatures consistent with the Higgs particle. Later measurements of its spin and couplings test whether this scalar has the predicted role. Finding the boson does not explain why the Higgs potential has its particular parameters.
Precision tests are a different kind of evidence
A theory can predict rates and small corrections, not only new particles. Z-pole measurements, rare decays, and the muon’s magnetic behavior test detailed calculations. For muon g−2 especially, experiment–theory comparisons depend on difficult hadronic inputs; do not label it a settled discovery of new physics. As checked on 16 October 2026, Fermilab’s final 2025 result is a precision benchmark. The 2025 Muon g−2 Theory Initiative comparison is compatible with experiment within its quoted uncertainty, while hadronic calculations and input tensions remain under study. Quote the particular theory calculation and date when describing a discrepancy.
How to read a claim
Ask what the apparatus directly recorded, which reconstruction inferred the particle, what alternate backgrounds were considered, how significance was calculated, and whether independent experiments agree. A strong claim has a chain from event data to model prediction.
Dates mark landmark observations; the course’s source list links to the experiment histories.
Takeaway: Experimental evidence is a network of signatures, rates, and cross-checks.

What did the 1973 neutral-current evidence test?
- Weak interactions without a charged final lepton
- The first Higgs boson
- Free isolated gluons
Answer and explanation
Weak interactions without a charged final lepton
Neutral weak interactions were a predicted electroweak feature.
What was discovered in 1983?
- W and Z bosons

- Neutrino oscillations
Answer and explanation
W and Z bosons
CERN experiments observed W and Z carriers.
What did 1998 oscillation evidence imply?
- Nonzero neutrino mass differences
- Exactly zero neutrino masses
- Four new charged leptons
Answer and explanation
Nonzero neutrino mass differences
Flavor oscillation requires mass-state differences.
What did the 2012 Higgs discovery directly establish?
- A new boson consistent with the Higgs role
- The origin of every Yukawa value
- A free quark particle
Answer and explanation
A new boson consistent with the Higgs role
The detected boson and measured properties test the Higgs sector.
How should one treat muon g−2 as of this overview?
- A precision test with theory-input questions, not settled new physics
- A proof the model is false
- The reason electrons have spin 1/2
Answer and explanation
A precision test with theory-input questions, not settled new physics
Its interpretation depends on detailed hadronic theory comparisons.
