Open problems: what the model leaves open

The Standard Model works extraordinarily well in its domain and still leaves deep questions about its parameters and scope.

Different kinds of missing answer

Some facts are measured inputs the model does not derive, such as many masses and mixing parameters. Some observations call for physics outside the minimal model, such as neutrino mass. Some theoretical puzzles ask whether a mathematically permitted value is unexpectedly small. Do not lump all three into one failure.

The hierarchy or naturalness question

Quantum corrections to a scalar mass are sensitive to assumptions about much higher energy scales. Why does the Higgs remain near the electroweak scale if very high scales also matter? This is a question about theoretical expectations and possible deeper physics, not an experimental proof that a new particle must exist at a particular energy.

The strong CP question

QCD mathematically permits a term that could violate CP symmetry. Experiments place a very tight bound on the resulting effects, such as an electric dipole moment of the neutron. Why is the effective strong CP parameter so tiny? Candidate ideas include an axion mechanism, but no solution is established in this course.

Matter–antimatter imbalance

Known weak CP violation exists, but the observed cosmic imbalance is not fully explained by the simplest Standard Model story. A successful account must match cosmological evidence and particle constraints. Naming CP violation alone does not solve the problem.

Dark matter and gravity

The Standard Model does not supply a confirmed dark-matter particle and does not include a quantum theory of gravity. These are scope limits. They do not mean that its electron or W predictions cease to work in their tested domain.

Neutrino masses and flavor

Oscillations require nonzero mass differences, while the original minimal model has massless neutrinos. Various extensions can give mass, but we do not know the complete mechanism. Do not silently insert one into the 25-card conventional atlas as a measured fact.

How to sort a new idea

First say which specific gap it addresses. Then list the measured phenomena it must reproduce, the mathematical rule it proposes, the new prediction, and what observation could distinguish it. A story that merely renames the gap is not yet an explanation.

What the whole course now equips you to ask

For an electron derivation, demand spin, charges, chirality, mass, antiparticle and couplings. For a new strong-force proposal, demand scale behavior and confinement. For a Higgs explanation, demand both the vacuum structure and measured scalar couplings. These are concrete tests rather than a claim that every mystery has been solved.

Retell the throughline

Quantum states and relativistic processes motivate fields. Symmetry and gauge structure organize conserved quantities and interactions. The Higgs vacuum reorganizes electroweak carriers and charged-fermion masses. Couplings run with scale; diagrams and nonperturbative tools make testable predictions. Experiments confirm much of this structure; parameters and several phenomena remain unexplained. Each step is a useful question to take back through the lessons.

An open question is not automatically a discovered new particle or a failed measurement.

Takeaway: Separate measured facts from unexplained inputs and speculative solutions.

What is the strong CP problem?

  1. Why an allowed QCD CP-violating effect appears extremely small
  2. Why W bosons are charged
  3. Why the proton has three quarks
Answer and explanation

Why an allowed QCD CP-violating effect appears extremely small

QCD permits a CP term, yet tight observations constrain its effects.

What is the hierarchy question about?

  1. Why the Higgs scale is stable relative to much higher possible scales
  2. Why gold has 79 protons
  3. Why photons have two polarizations
Answer and explanation

Why the Higgs scale is stable relative to much higher possible scales

It concerns scalar mass sensitivity and assumptions about high scales.

Has an axion solution been established experimentally?

  1. No
  2. Yes, every axion is a gluon
  3. Yes, the Higgs boson is an axion
Answer and explanation

No

Axion mechanisms are candidates, not confirmed conclusions here.

What does neutrino oscillation establish?

  1. Nonzero differences among neutrino mass states
  2. A unique known mass for each flavor
  3. A new electric charge for neutrinos
Answer and explanation

Nonzero differences among neutrino mass states

Oscillation establishes mass-state differences, not the complete mass mechanism.

Does the Standard Model include a confirmed dark-matter particle?

  1. No
  2. Yes, the ordinary photon
  3. Yes, one of eight gluons
Answer and explanation

No

No confirmed dark-matter particle is part of the minimal Standard Model.

What should a deeper proposal supply beyond a story?

  1. Rules, reproduced data, and a distinguishing test
  2. Only new names for old phenomena
  3. Only a list of particles
Answer and explanation

Rules, reproduced data, and a distinguishing test

The gap, mechanism, predictions and tests must be explicit.
